In α. forms apparently assimilated to abstract nouns in -ate suffix1; however, compare post-classical Latin supplicatus entreaty (8th cent., 13th cent. in British sources; 15th cent. in a continental source). Compare earlier supplication n.In university use arising from its occurrence as the first word in the formula used by the proctor in presenting the petition. The specific use of the noun is not paralleled in the Latin text of the Laudian Statutes of Oxford University (1636), although it frequently uses supplicat ‘he supplicates’ as the first word in the formula. In quots. 1660 at sense 1 and 1859, perhaps an independent formation in -ate suffix1.
