U.S. (in the period of racial segregation, in certain parts of the United States) a town in which black people face intimidation, harassment, attack, or forcible expulsion if they remain overnight or go outside after sunset; cf. don't let the sun go down (also set) on you at sun n.1 Phrases 2a(a)(iii).Quot. 1907 shows isolated earlier use in sense ‘a town in which all businesses or other establishments are closed by sunset’, with reference to the town's new-found respectability after outlawing gambling.
