Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; probably modelled on a Chinese lexical item. Etymons: brain n., washing n.
Etymology: < brain n. + washing n., probably after Chinese xǐ nǎo (noun) brainwashing, (verb) to brainwash (although this is first attested later: 1959 or earlier; < to wash, cleanse + nǎo brain). Compare brainwash n. and slightly later brainwash v.Earlier found in sporadic use with reference to various physical procedures affecting the brain, as in the following example referring to physical experimentation on an animal:1893 Zoophilist Mar. 291/2 But months passed, and many more brain-washings passed with them, before this poor affectionate little creature was released by death out of that monster's hands.

The systematic and often forcible elimination from a person's mind of all established ideas, esp. political ones, so that another set of ideas may take their place; this process regarded as the kind of coercive conversion practised by certain totalitarian states on political dissidents. Also attributive and in weakened sense: the action of pressurizing or persuading a person into a belief considered undesirable.
