2. Probably a variant of or error for: sun squall n. at sun n.1 Compounds 5c. Obsolete. rare.Only in Kipling. N.E.D. (1917) explains this as ‘a patch of sunlight reflected on the surface of water’, probably following Cent. Dict. Suppl. (1909) ‘surfaces of water reflecting sunlight and causing sunscald’. However, a simple mishearing or misunderstanding of sun squall seems much more likely.
