Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin superficiārius.
Etymology: < classical Latin superficiārius (adjective) (of buildings) held in tenure on another person's land, (noun) person who enjoys the tenure of a building on another person's land (2nd cent. a.d. in legal context), in post-classical Latin also superficial (from 12th cent. in British sources; from 14th cent. in continental sources) < superficiēs superficies n. + -ārius -ary suffix1. Compare Middle French, French superficiaire (1546 or earlier in sense A. 2; the legal use as noun is apparently not paralleled until later: 19th cent.). Compare earlier superficial adj.With superficiary right (see sense A. 4) compare post-classical Latin ius superficiarium (1551 or earlier).
