Etymology: < German Acetyl (1837, in Ann. der Phys. u. Chemie 42 439) < classical Latin acētum acetum n. + German -yl -yl suffix, after e.g. Aceton acetone n. Compare French acétyle (1840 in a translation of Liebig's work). Compare slightly earlier ethyl n.
