Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French supereminent; Latin supereminent-, supereminēns, superēminēre.
Etymology: < (i) Middle French supereminent superior, supreme (c1460), exceptionally high (c1467), and its etymon (ii) post-classical Latin supereminent-, supereminēns superior, supreme (Vulgate), raised well above (5th cent. in Augustine), use as adjective of present participle of classical Latin superēminēre to stand out above < super- super- prefix + ēminēre (see eminent adj.). Compare Spanish sobreeminente, supereminente (both 1528), French suréminent pre-eminent (1628).
