Etymology: < rib n.1 + basting n.3, in early use probably after rib-baste v. Compare earlier rib-roasting n., the parallel of which may have suggested (either in earlier or later use) a connection also with basting n.2
Obsolete.
The act of beating a person severely, esp. on or about the ribs. Cf. earlier rib-baste v., rib-roasting n.
