Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin supereminentia.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin supereminentia excellence, pre-eminence (4th cent.), superior height (13th cent. in British sources) < classical Latin superēminent- , superēminēns , present participle of superēminēre (see supereminent adj.) + -ia -ia suffix1; compare -ence suffix. Compare Middle French supereminence pre-eminence (c1377 in a small number of attestations in Oresme), Middle French, French suréminence superior height (c1380 in an isolated attestation), pre-eminence (1609). Compare earlier supereminent adj.
