单词 bowsprit
释义

bowspritn.

Brit. /ˈbəʊsprɪt/, /ˈbaʊsprɪt/, U.S. /ˈbaʊˌsprɪt/, /ˈboʊˌsprɪt/
Forms: α. Middle English bouspret, 1500s boespritte, 1600s– bowsprit; β. 1500s–1600s boresprit, 1600s borespritt, boar-spright; γ. 1500s boltspreet, 1600s boultspret, 1600s–1800s boltsprit; δ. 1600s boldspreet; ε. 1600s bole-sprit, bowle-, boulspret, boule spret, -sprit.
Etymology: Found in all the modern Germanic languages: Dutch boegspriet , Low German bogspret , German bug- , bogspriet (from Low German or Dutch), Swedish bogspröt , Danish bogspryd ; in all connected with the ship's bow n.3, and with a word, in Old English spréot pole (Middle English spret , spreet ), Dutch spriet spear, javelin, Swedish spröt insect's feeler. Compare also Old High German spriuzan , Middle High German spriuzen to prop. The origin seems to lie between Low German, Dutch, and English: in the latter spréot was itself used in a nautical sense in Old English and Middle English (see sprit n.1). But against the compound bow-sprit being of English rise, are the late appearance of bow in the language, and the numerous perverted forms with bore, boar, bolt, bold, bole, bowle, which seem to show that the connection with bow was not evident to English sailors, either in sense or pronunciation. (Quotations for the word are very rare before 1590.)
1. A large spar or boom running out from the stem of a vessel, to which (and the jib-boom and flying jib-boom, which extend beyond it) the foremast stays are fastened.
