Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin suī , suus , -ist suffix.
Etymology: < classical Latin suus one's own (Old Latin soueis, dative and ablative plural, attested in an inscription; < the same Indo-European base as Sanskrit sva, ancient Greek ὅς, ἑός, Lithuanian savas, and (with a suffix) Old Church Slavonic svoi, Old Prussian swais: see note) + -ist suffix. The formation may be specifically on the genitive form suī of oneself.Classical Latin suus is the adjective corresponding to (accusative), sibi (dative) oneself, itself (see per se n.3 and adv.).
Obsolete.
A person who does as he or she pleases, esp. (in early use) in matters of religion; a selfish person.
