Etymology: < South African Dutch zuikerbosch (apparently early 19th cent. or earlier) and its reflex Afrikaans suikerbos < Dutch zuiker sugar n. + bosch bush n.1 Compare sugar-bush n.Compare the following earlier occurrence of South African Dutch zuikerboom , in the same sense, in an English context (late 18th cent. or earlier; < zuiker sugar n. + boom tree (see beam n.1); compare sugar-tree n. South African.
Any of various South African evergreen shrubs or small trees of the genus Protea, esp. P. repens, which has pink and white flowers and produces a large amount of sweet nectar. Cf. sugar-bush n. 2.
