Etymology: < classical Latin subterrēnus situated below the level of the earth, beneath the horizon (2nd cent. a.d. in Apuleius) < sub- sub- prefix + terrēnus terrene adj. Compare earlier subterraneal adj., subterranean adj., subterraneous adj., subterrestrial adj., and slightly later subterrane adj. With use as noun compare earlier subterraneal n., subterranean n., subterrany n.
