Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin Suevicus, Suēbicus.
Etymology: Partly (in α. forms) < post-classical Latin Suevicus (11th cent.), variant (after classical Latin Suēvus Sueve n.) of classical Latin Suēbicus (see below); and partly (in β. forms) < classical Latin Suēbicus < Suēbī (plural) members of a group of Germanic tribes located east of the River Elbe (see Sueve n.) + -icus -ic suffix. Compare earlier Suevical adj.Compare Middle French, French Suéuique (1576 or earlier). With Suevic Sea (see quot. 1663 at sense 2) compare classical Latin Suēbicum mare . On the application to modern Swabia in sense 1 compare note at Suevian n.
