单词 suevian
释义

Sueviann.adj.

Brit. /ˈswiːvɪən/, /ˈsweɪvɪən/, U.S. /ˈswiviən/, /ˈsweɪviən/
Forms:

α. 1500s–1600s Sueuian, 1600s– Suevian.

β. 1600s– Suebian.

Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin Suēvus , Suēbus , -ian suffix.
Etymology: Partly (in α. forms) < classical Latin Suēvus, variant of Suēbus (see Sueve n.) + -ian suffix; and partly (in β. forms) < classical Latin Suēbus (see Sueve n.) + -ian suffix. Compare Sueve n., Suevi n., and Suevic adj.Compare Middle French, French Sueuien , Suevien , noun (1540 or earlier in sense A. 2, 1572 or earlier in sense A. 1) and adjective (1605 or earlier in sense B. 2). Compare classical Latin Suēbia (Tacitus Germania 43. 2, 46. 1), post-classical Latin Suevia (7th cent.), Hellenistic Greek Σουηβία , denoting the region inhabited by these peoples. The application in senses A. 2 and B. 1 to modern Swabia (German Schwaben ) reflects the derivation of the name of this region ultimately from the name of the Suēbī . Compare Swabian n., Swabian adj., and compare also post-classical Latin Suevia (10th cent. or earlier denoting the medieval Duchy).
A. n.
1. historical. A member of a group of Germanic peoples that in the late Republic and the early Empire was reported by Roman authors to have inhabited large territories in central Europe east of the Rhine; in late antiquity, a member of a group of Germanic peoples that migrated west of the Rhine and settled in the Roman territory, particularly in Spain. It is disputed whether the application of the name Suevians to the latter group reflects historical continuity or literary convention.
