Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin Suēvī; Suēbī.
Etymology: Partly (in α. forms) < classical Latin Suēvī (plural), the name of a group of ancient Germanic peoples (see Sueve n.); and partly (in β. forms) < classical Latin Suēbī, variant of Suēvī (compare note at Sueve n.). Compare Sueve n., Suevian n.
A group of Germanic peoples that in the late Republic and the early Empire was reported by Roman authors to have inhabited large territories in central Europe east of the Rhine; in late antiquity, a member of a group of Germanic peoples that migrated west of the Rhine and settled in the Roman territory, particularly in Spain. Cf. Sueve n., Suevian n. 1.It is disputed whether the application of the name Suevians to the latter group reflects historical continuity or literary convention.
