Etymology: < aceto- comb. form + -phenone comb. form, after German Acetophenon (1870 or earlier).
Chemistry.
A yellow, sweet-smelling liquid which crystallizes just below room temperature, used in the manufacture of certain synthetic perfumes.Systematic name: 1-phenylethanone; C6H5COCH3. Formerly used as a soporific: cf. hypnone n.
