Etymology: < post-classical Latin subsannation-, subsannatio mockery, derision (Vulgate) < subsannat- , past participial stem of subsannare subsannate v. + classical Latin -iō -ion suffix1. Compare Anglo-Norman subsannatiun , Anglo-Norman and Middle French, French †subsannation (first half of the 12th cent. in Anglo-Norman, subsequently in 16th cent. and again in 1789; also 13th cent. in Old French as sussannacion , with prefix substitution: see sous- prefix). Compare earlier subsannator n. and later subsannate v.
