Etymology: In sense 1 probably < super- prefix + charged adj., after supercharge n. In sense 2 < super- prefix + charged adj. In sense 3 < supercharge v. + -ed suffix1. N.E.D. (1917) indicates the stress as falling on the second element in sense 2.
1. Heraldry. Designating a charge with one or more further charges placed within and upon it. Cf. supercharge n. 1. Now rare.
