Etymology: < Middle French sommaire summary adj. + -ly suffix2, after Anglo-Norman somerement, sommierement and Middle French sommairement (see summarily adv.; French sommairement ). Compare slightly earlier summarily adv. and slightly later summar adj.In summerly et de plano in quot. 1540 after post-classical Latin summarie et de plano (see summarily adv.).
