Etymology: < post-classical Latin stella maris ‘star of the sea’ (title of the Virgin Mary, first attested in St Jerome, Lib. de Nominibus Hebraicis ( PL 23.842), where it is proposed as the sense of the supposed Hebrew etyma of Maria Mary n.1) < classical Latin stella star (see stella n.) + maris , genitive of mare sea (see mere n.1).
A title given to the Virgin Mary (see sea-star n. 1), used allusively of a protectress or a guiding spirit.
