释义

suboscinen.adj.

Brit. /sʌbˈɒsʌɪn/, /sʌbˈɒsɪn/, U.S. /ˌsəbˈɑsn/, /ˌsəbˈɑˌsaɪn/
Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: sub- prefix, oscine n.1
Etymology: < sub- prefix + oscine n.1, after scientific Latin Suboscines, former suborder name (H. Gadow 1893, in Bronn's Klassen u. Ordnungen des Thier-Reichs VI. iv. ii. 272), replacing earlier scientific Latin Pseudoscines (see pseudoscinine adj.).

A. n.
A bird of the suborder Tyranni (formerly Suboscines or Deutero-Oscines), which comprises passerines other than the songbirds, such as pittas, antbirds, tyrant flycatchers, and cotingas, found chiefly in South America. Cf. oscine n.1The suboscines are usually regarded as more primitive than the oscines, having a less specialized syringeal anatomy. The families included in the suborder, and their taxonomic arrangement, are under review.
