Etymology: < sub- prefix + oscine n.¹, after scientific Latin Suboscines, former suborder name (H. Gadow 1893, in Bronn's Klassen u. Ordnungen des Thier-Reichs VI. iv. ii. 272), replacing earlier scientific Latin Pseudoscines (see pseudoscinine adj.).

A bird of the suborder Tyranni (formerly Suboscines or Deutero-Oscines), which comprises passerines other than the songbirds, such as pittas, antbirds, tyrant flycatchers, and cotingas, found chiefly in South America. Cf. oscine n.¹The suboscines are usually regarded as more primitive than the oscines, having a less specialized syringeal anatomy. The families included in the suborder, and their taxonomic arrangement, are under review.
