Etymology: < French amorce (1549 in Middle French), specific use of amorce bait, lure (c1280 in Old French as amorse ), use as noun of past participle of amordre to bite at, to take a bait (13th cent.) < classical Latin admordēre to bite at < ad- ad- prefix + mordēre to bite (see mordant adj.).
1. A type of fine-grained gunpowder. Obsolete. rare.

1779 G. Smith Universal Mil. Dict. Amorce, an old military word for fine-grained powder, such as is sometimes used for the priming of great guns, mortars or howitzers; as also for small-arms, on account of its rapid inflammation.
2. A small packet or container filled with explosive material which can be detonated by striking or friction; esp. a cap (cap n.1 14b) used in a toy gun.
