Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: sub- prefix, mucous adj.
Etymology: < sub- prefix + mucous adj. In sense 1 after post-classical Latin submucosus (1526 in a translation of Hippocrates, or earlier) < classical Latin sub- sub- prefix + mūcōsus mucous adj., apparently after ancient Greek ὑπόμυξος (compare also the note). In sense 2a after French sous-muqueux ( M. F. X. Bichat Anat. générale (1812) I. 17, as soumuqueux).The work translated in quot. 1684 is W. ten Rhyne Dissertatio de arthritide (1683). The passage is a paraphrase of Hippocrates De Articulis; the corresponding Greek text has ὑπόμυξος.
