单词 cushitic
释义

Cushiticn.adj.

Brit. /kᵿˈʃɪtɪk/, U.S. /kᵿˈʃɪdɪk/
Forms: 1800s– Cushitic, 1800s– Kushitic.
Origin: Perhaps from a proper name, combined with an English element. Perhaps formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: proper name Cush , -itic suffix; Cushite n., -ic suffix.
Etymology: Either (i) < the name of the ancient region of Cush, Kush (see Cushite n.) + -itic suffix; or (ii) < Cushite n. + -ic suffix, probably after German kuschitisch (adjective), originally designating the ancient people and their language (1816 or earlier; with later uses see the discussion below). The uses with reference to a group of modern languages in Africa appear to go back to J. L. Krapf, a German scholar who published in both German and English. He appears to have proposed the word as a linguistic term in an English context, but only in combinations (compare quots. 1854 at sense A. 1 and 1854 at sense B. 1), basing the nomenclature on the assumed descent of the speakers from the people of ancient Cush (compare quot. B. 2). Krapf also published a German version of this discussion in 1857, in which corresponding German compounds are used both as adjectives and nouns. The modern linguistic definition of Cushitic is different, but ultimately developed from such early attempts at classification. With modern linguistic uses compare Cushite n. 2 (although there, the slightly earlier quot. 1850 appears to refer to the apparently unrelated language of the ancient people).
