Etymology: < Middle French sublimatoire (although this is apparently first attested later: 15th cent.; French (now hist.) sublimatoire ) or its probable etymon post-classical Latin sublimatorium (although this is apparently first attested later: a1490 in a British source) < classical Latin sublīmāt- , past participial stem of sublīmāre sublime v. + -ōrium -ory suffix1. Compare later sublimatory adj.The ending of the English word may indicate an (otherwise unattested) Anglo-Norman etymon.
Chemistry. Now historical and rare.
A container in which substances are heated in order to sublime them. Cf. sublimator n. 1.
