Origin: A borrowing from Turkish. Etymon: Ottoman Turkish sūbāši.
Etymology: < Ottoman Turkish sūbāši (Turkish subaşı) < † army + bāš head, chief + , suffix forming compounds.In α. forms remodelled after sub- prefix. In forms with final -a and -aw remodelled after bashaw n.; compare especially quots. 1632 and 1688. In γ. forms after French soubassi (1612 or earlier). In δ. forms remodelled after sous- prefix. N.E.D. (1914) gives the pronunciation as (sūbā·ʃi) /suːˈbɑːʃɪ/.
