Origin: From a proper name, combined with an English element. Etymons: proper name Subarū , -ian suffix.
Etymology: < subar- (in Akkadian Subarū, Subartu, Subartum, also Šubari'um, Šubarū, Šubartu) + -ian suffix; compare Sumerian Subir , Subur . In α. forms perhaps after German Subaräer, noun (1908 or earlier; 1884 or earlier as Šubaräer); compare -ean suffix. Compare also French subarien (1927 or earlier).The Akkadian and Sumerian toponyms refer to varying areas to the north of southern Mesopotamia. In the third and second millennia b.c. they denoted an extensive area situated to the north of southern Mesopotamia. Secondary meanings range from the northern world region to specific polities in the area. The term was applied to various peoples including the Hurrians in the second millennium b.c. and the Assyrians in the first millennium b.c. O.E.D. Suppl. (1986) gives the pronunciation as (siŭbărī·ăn) /sjʊbəˈriːən/.
