Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with English elements. Etymons: sub- prefix, Latin vir , -ate suffix1.
Etymology: < sub- prefix + classical Latin vir man (see virile adj.) + -ate suffix1, probably punningly after e.g. triumvirate n., quadrumvirate n., and perhaps also names of chemical compounds in sub- prefix and -ate suffix1 (e.g. subacetate n., subphosphate n.). N.E.D. (1915) gives the pronunciation as (sɒ·bvireit) /ˈsʌbvɪreɪt/.
humorous. Obsolete.
A class of men who are weaker and less manly than normal men.Apparently an isolated use.
