Etymology: < post-classical Latin sublapsarius, noun (1620 or earlier; < classical Latin sub- sub- prefix + lapsus lapse n. + -ārius -ary suffix1) + -an suffix. Compare French sublapsaire (1631 or earlier as noun, 1724 or earlier as adjective). Compare the antonyms supralapsarian adj., supralapsarian n. Compare also Infralapsarian adj., Infralapsarian n.

Designating the Calvinist doctrine that God's election of only some people to everlasting life was not originally part of the divine plan, but a consequence of the Fall of Man; of, relating to, or holding this view. Opposed to supralapsarian adj.Largely synonymous with Infralapsarian adj., but some writers distinguish the two (see note at Infralapsarian n.).
