Etymology: < intellectual adj. + -ism suffix. In sense 2 after German †Intellectualismus (1804 or earlier in this sense; now Intellektualismus ; sense 1 is apparently unparalleled in German until later (1860 or earlier)). Compare earlier intellectualist n.
