Etymology: < post-classical Latin subiugalis (of a beast of burden) accustomed to the yoke (early 5th cent.; compare subiugale (neuter noun) beast of burden (Vetus Latina, Vulgate)), subservient (8th cent.), (in music) plagal (9th cent.) < classical Latin sub- sub- prefix + iugum yoke (see jugum n.) + -ālis -al suffix1.
