单词 stupor mundi
释义

stupor mundin.

Brit. /ˈstuːpɔː ˈmʊndi/, /ˌst(j)uːpə ˈmʊndi/, U.S. /ˌstupɔr ˈmʊndi/, /ˌst(j)upər ˈmʊndi/
Forms: also with capital initials.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin stupor mundi.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin stupor mundi (13th cent. in British and continental sources: see note) < classical Latin stupor stupor n. + mundī , genitive of mundus world (see mundane adj.).The Latin phrase was used of the Pope by Geoffrey of Vinsauf, and to describe the Emperor Frederick II of Germany by the historian Matthew Paris (both 13th cent.). The use with reference to the English clergy or church is apparently after post-classical Latin clerus Anglicanus stupor mundi ‘Anglican clergy, the wonder of the world’ and its variants, supposedly first used at the Synod of Dort or Dordrecht in 1618–19. Not fully naturalized in English.
(The) wonder of the world; a person who or thing which is an object of general or widespread astonishment, admiration, or bewilderment; a marvel, a prodigy. Cf. stupor n. 2.Although since the later 19th cent. the phrase stupor mundi has been most commonly used in English as a cognomen of Emperor Frederick II (see note at etymology), in the 16th and early 17th cent. it was applied ironically by English Protestant writers to the Pope. From the middle of the 17th cent. the English church (or its clergy) was frequently commended as stupor mundi.
