释义 | stupor mundin. (The) wonder of the world; a person who or thing which is an object of general or widespread astonishment, admiration, or bewilderment; a marvel, a prodigy. Cf. stupor n. 2.Although since the later 19th cent. the phrase stupor mundi has been most commonly used in English as a cognomen of Emperor Frederick II (see note at etymology), in the 16th and early 17th cent. it was applied ironically by English Protestant writers to the Pope. From the middle of the 17th cent. the English church (or its clergy) was frequently commended as stupor mundi.
