Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin acētum , -ated suffix.
Etymology: < classical Latin acētum acetum n. + -ated suffix. Compare post-classical Latin acetatus mixed with vinegar (13th cent. or earlier), turned into an acetate (c1784 or earlier). Compare earlier acetation n. and slightly later acetate n.
Treated or combined with acetic acid; formed into an acetate.
