Stress is usually determined by a subsequent element and vowels may be reduced accordingly. Some degree of stress is always maintained on the second syllable. If the subsequent element is an existing word, it is likely to retain its original stress pattern, e.g. subclavio-carotid Brit. /sʌbˌkleɪvɪə(ʊ)kəˈrɒtɪd/, U.S. /ˌsəbˌkleɪvioʊkəˈrɑdəd/.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin subclavius , -o- connective.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin subclavius (see subclavius n.) + -o- connective, after subclavian adj.Found in a small number of formations illustrated below.

Forming adjectives with the sense ‘subclavian and ——’, as subclavio-axillary, subclavio-carotid, etc.
