Forms: Also Middle English Orm. blunnt, Middle English–1500s blont.
Etymology: Etymology unknown: found in Ormin c1200, in a sense which has suggested some connection with Old Norse blunda to doze, blunda augum to shut the eyes, blundr dozing, sleep (Vigfusson). It has been proposed to explain the form as a contracted past participle for blunded, blund, Old Norse blundað, blundat; but past participles in -nt < -nd are not found so early as 1200; Ormin has none. And this would hardly give the required sense, since blunda was intransitive in Old Norse, and the participle could hardly exist there. Other suggestions are that blunt might be some kind of side-form of blind, or a nasalized derivative of a Germanic root *blut-, whence Old Norse blaut soft, weak, modern German blosz naked, Frisian blat, bleat naked, Old English bléat wretched. But in the present state of the question these are mere conjectures, having no contact with the history of the word.

For this notion blunt is now the established word; and this is also now the leading literal sense, which tends to influence the other senses.
