Etymology: < strato- comb. form2 + volcano n., after German Stratovulkan (K. von Seebach 1866, in Zeitschr. der Deutschen Geologischen Gesellschaft 18 644).Compare the following earlier use of the German word in an English context:1882 A. Geikie Text-bk. Geol. i. i. §3. 243 Von Seebach..distinguished two volcanic types. 1st, Bedded Volcanoes (Strato-Vulkane), composed of successive sheets of lava and tuffs, and embracing the great majority of volcanoes.
