Etymology: < Hellenistic Greek στραταρχία office of a general < ancient Greek στρατάρχης (also στράταρχος ) general ( < στρατός army (see stratocracy n.) + -αρχης , -αρχος -arch comb. form1) + -ία -y suffix3. Compare post-classical Latin stratarchia office of a general (1664 in an isolated attestation).
