strassn.2

Brit. /stras/, U.S. /stræs/
Forms: 1800s–1900s strass, 1800s–1900s strasse.
Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymons: French strasse, estrace.
Etymology: < French strasse scrap silk (1690), variant (with elision of the initial vowel) of estrace (1554 in Middle French in this sense; 1439 in papier d'estrasse paper of inferior quality) < Old Occitan estrassa rejection (1397 in papier d'estrassa ) < estrassar to tear (c1250) < an unattested post-classical Latin form *extractiare < classical Latin ex- ex- prefix1 + tractus , past participle of trahere to draw (see tract n.3); compare -ate suffix3. Compare Italian straccio silk which has been frayed from cocoons with the help of a comb (perhaps 14th cent.; end of the 13th cent. in sense ‘rag, strap of cloth’), which ultimately derives from the same unattested post-classical Latin verb.Sense 2, which is not recorded in dictionaries of French, probably shows an extended use of sense 1. In form strass apparently influenced by strass n.1
