Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; probably modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: sub- prefix, constable n.
Etymology: < sub- prefix + constable n., probably after post-classical Latin subconstabularius (frequently from 1264 in British sources), subconestabulus (1273 in a British source) under-constable (of a castle). Compare Anglo-Norman southeconstable (c1343; with the form compare discussion at south-bailie n.). Compare under-constable n.
historical in later use.
An officer immediately subordinate to a constable; an under-constable; a deputy constable. Also occasionally as a title or form of address.In later use chiefly with reference to the Royal Irish Constabulary, in which the office of sub-constable existed as an official rank from the early 19th cent. until 1883.
