Etymology: < the names of William Stokes (1804–78) and Robert Adams (1791–1875), Irish physicians, who described the condition in 1846 ( Dublin Q. Jrnl. Med. Sci. II. 73) and 1827 ( Dublin Hosp. Rep. IV. 414) respectively.
Medicine.
Used attributively to designate occasional transient cessation or extreme slowness of the pulse, esp. when caused by heart-block.
