Forms: late Middle English– statua, 1500s–1600s statuas (plural), 1600s statuaes (plural), 1600s statua's (plural).
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin statua.
Etymology: < classical Latin statua (see statue n.). Compare earlier statue n.In editions of Shakespeare sometimes substituted for the reading statue of earlier editions (and of many later ones) in places where metrical evidence suggests a trisyllabic pronunciation (as Rich. III, iii. vii. 25, Jul. C. ii. ii. 76, iii. ii. 186, 2 Hen. VI, iii. ii. 80); compare e.g.:1793 I. Reed Note on Two Gentleman of Verona in Plays of Shakespeare III. 275 Statue here, I think, should be written statua, and pronounced as it generally, if not always, was.., a word of three syllables.
Now rare (archaic in later use).
