Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: stato- comb. form, -meter comb. form2.
Etymology: < stato- comb. form + -meter comb. form2. In sense 1 after French statomètre (P. Picard 1883, in Comptes rendus hebd. de l'Acad. des Sci. 97 1063). In sense 2 after German Statometer (1873 or earlier).
1. Mechanics. An instrument for measuring the torque of a machine by balancing it against the force exerted by an electromagnet carrying a known current. rare.
