Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: re- prefix, continue v.
Etymology: < re- prefix + continue v., after Middle French recontinuer (13th cent in Old French; also in Anglo-Norman in senses ‘to hold a meeting of (a specified body) again’, (in legal use) ‘to be in force again’; French recontinuer; now rare). Compare post-classical Latin recontinuare to resume tenancy of (1453 in a British source).
