Etymology: Corresponds to French estamel (1611 in Godefroy), modern dialect estamelle , either < estame + -el , -elle , or < estamine stamin n., by substitution of suffix; compare the Old French synonyms estamet , estamot , formed with other diminutive suffixes. The English word may be < French estamel(le (though recorded earlier), but it may be an independent alteration of stamin n.
Now only archaic or Historical.
1. A coarse woollen cloth, or linsey-woolsey, usually dyed red; an under-garment of this material, worn by ascetics. Cf. stamin n.
