Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: startle v., reflex n.
Etymology: < startle v. + reflex n.
An involuntary reaction to a sudden stimulus, esp. a loud noise, often involving contraction of groups of muscles of the limbs and neck; a similar reaction shown by an animal. Cf. startle response n.In human infants this reaction is also called the Moro reflex (see Moro n.4) and is characterized by distinctive movements of the arms and legs.
