Etymology: < German Sprudel mineral water from the Sprudel, a hot spring at Karlovy Vary (formerly Carlsbad) in the Czech Republic (early 19th cent.; end of the 18th cent. as the name of this mineral spring; now usually denoting mineral water or lemonade) < sprudeln to bubble, fizz (end of the 17th cent.), probably an alteration of sprühen to spray (compare spray v.2).
Now rare.
