Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Panmelodicon.
Etymology: < German Panmelodicon (1810, in Allgemeine musikalische Zeitung 2 May 487/1; apparently so named by its inventor, F. Leppich) < pan- pan- comb. form + Hellenistic Greek μελῳδικόν , neuter of μελῳδικός melodic adj. Compare earlier panharmonicon n., and later melodicon n.
Music. Now historical.
A keyboard instrument similar to the clavicylinder, in which sound is made by friction between tuned metal bars and a rotating barrel.

1838 Encycl. Brit. XVI. 789/2 Panmelodicon, an instrument invented by Leppich at Vienna in 1810. By means of a conical barrel moved by a wheel, rods of metal, bent to a right angle, were made to sound when the finger-keys were pressed down.
1943 Isis 34 332/1 And to mention various other instruments varying slightly in mechanism, the exact nature of which is of no moment here, but whose names are sufficiently descriptive: the melodicon and panmelodicon.
1993 M. N. Clinkscale Makers of Piano 1700–1820 208/1 Müller also invented a Panmelodicon and a harp with a keyboard.
