1938 Anslow & Raistrick in Biochem. Jrnl. XXXII. 689 Birkinshaw & Raistrick (1931) reported the isolation from cultures of strains in the Penicillium spinulosum Thom series of a new mould metabolic product which was unnamed at that time, but for which the name spinulosin is now proposed.

1946 Nature 17 Aug. 241/1 Fumigatin, spinulosin, helvolic acid, and gliotoxin are the four metabolic products of A. fumigatus which show considerable antibiotic activity.
