Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymons: French espuchoir, espuisoir.
Etymology: < Old French (Northern) espuchoir (13th cent. in an isolated attestation; compare Middle French (Normandy) espuchoir (1518)), variant of Old French espuisoir, espusoir vessel used to draw water, especially in firefighting (1247) < Anglo-Norman espoucher , espucher , espuchier , espucier , Anglo-Norman and Middle French espuiser , Old French, Middle French espuisier (French épuiser ) to draw (water) (c1140), to drain (first half of the 12th cent.; apparently < es- es- prefix + puiser , puisier to draw (water) (although this is apparently first attested later: c1200; French puiser ; < puis well: see pie n.2)) + -oir (see -ory suffix1).In form spuid-sear via Scottish Gaelic spuidsear.
Now rare (chiefly Scottish, Irish English, and Manx English in later use).
A wooden ladle or scoop, typically with a long handle; esp. one used for bailing water from a boat (see also quot. 1890).
